ISLAMIC, Ayyubids. Yemen. Mu'izz al-Din Ism'ail, AH 593-598 / AD 1197-1202. Dirham (Silver, 22 mm, 1.93 g, 2 h), Taʿizz, AH 598 = 1201/2. In an 8-pointed square within a circle, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl / Allāh ṣalla Allāh / ʿalayh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘bism Allāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm ḍuriba hādhā al-dirham bi Taʿizz sana thamān wa tisʿīn wa kham[sa miʾa]’ (‘In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This dirham was struck in Taʿizz in the year 598’ in Arabic). Rev. In an 8-pointed square within a circle, ‘al-imām / al-hādī / ilā al-ḥaqq’ (‘The Imam [and] the Guide to the Truth’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘Abu’l-Faḍl (?) Ismāʿīl ibn Ṭughtakīn al-amawī … amīr al-muʾminīn’ (‘Abu’l-Fadl(?) Ismaʿil son of Tughtekin, the Umayyad, …, Commander of the Believers’ in Arabic). Album 1093. Very rare. Some scratches, otherwise, good very fine.
